Show your child how to read for enjoyment

Most children learn how to read in school. But they learn to love to read at home. It’s
up to you to show your child that reading isn’t just something she has to do for school—it’s also something she can do for fun.

To help your child learn to enjoy reading:

Be a good role model. Make time to read yourself. It doesn’t matter if you’re reading a novel, the newspaper or a recipe in a cookbook—the important thing is that your child sees you reading (and liking it!).

Make sure your child has a library card—and uses it. Turn library trips into special occasions— dress up like explorers and check out books on treasure hunting, for example. Your child will begin to associate the library with excitement.

Help your child find books about her special interests. If she’s interested in a certain subject, she’s more likely to want to read about it.
